Exhibitions on over Summer: the Portage and Waiclay
Both these selected exhibitions showcase work from some of the best of Aotearoa New Zealand’s ceramic practitioners. They are a must visit, and we are delighted to be included. Waiclay was judged by Greg Daly (Aust) and the Portage by John Parker (NZ).
Chuck Joseph “Seben Debils Ded: Inspired by puppets played with as a child and those made by Paul Klee for his children, these naive clay figures - manifestations of the biblical seben Debils - are fetish objects that both embody and confront dreams and nightmares, and cast out fear and doubt.”
Chuck Joseph “Monkey On My Back: An animal fetish. I started making this style of dog fetish after seeing a Pacific Island dog fetish in the Auckland Museum. Fetishes hold an elemental and private story and here they depict the colloquial phrase ”Having a monkey on your back”.
Louise Rive “Vessels: The faces depicted are sketched with black oxides, enveloped in white glaze and fired to become permanent. The vessel interiors are blood red. These people are looking silently, forever quiet but with opinions.”
